                                                                   Origins
The name Goulette or its Anglicized version ‘Gowlett’ or ‘Gowlate’ is unquestionably of French Origin.  In Ancient times
the name Gowlett,  ‘Goulette’ ‘Goulet’ was likely attached to a place or region, the French word ‘Goulet’ meaning
m~d`etranglement or ‘narrow passage’ or gully and so likely to be assigned to a place in or near a geological feature that
could be described thus.  A village on a mountain range could easily fit into this criterion.  There are many ravines in the
Massif Central Range, which spans more than a third of the country and where our ancestors eons ago could easily have
settled near any one of them. An individual re-settling in another area would be identified by his place of origin. An individual
from the above area would have been known as ie. John of ‘Goulet’, or John from the ‘Goulet’, which in time, the latter
                  became a Family Name.
                  There are two areas in France, which could accommodate the Place Name Theory;

The Medieval Fortress on the River Seign called Le Goulet where on 22nd May 1200 the Treaty of Le Goulet was
signed by Philippe II of France and John of England.
Alternatively a mountain in the South of France in the Massif Central Range called Montagne Goulet.

Investigation of the Domesday Book AD 1086 does not appear to have any reference to the name Gowlett in any variation
and this perhaps places strength in the hypothesis that the family had its roots in Southern France. As there are no other
known alternatives, we can possibly assume then, that the most likely place for the Cradle of the Name lies within this
beautiful French Mountain Range, which would undoubtedly whisper the ghostly tale of a long since extinct ancient village
once nestled somewhere within its bosom and of a simple Mountain Peoples who may have settled there since Antiquity.

                                                                                            Early Settlement in England

Many believe that the Gowlett Families arrived in England during the Flight of the Huganoughts in the 16th and 17th Century.
The earliest account of the name in England was an entry of John Gowlett in the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1524-25 for Steeple
                   Bumstead in North-West Essex.

With the institution of mandatory recording of Births, Deaths and Marriages in England's Parish Registers by Order of
Cromwell following the Reformation in 1538, evidence of the Gowlett name began to slowly appear. The main pockets of
settlement were in the areas of Sussex, Cambridge and Essex with some small satellite modules in Kent and Middlesex. It is
in Middlesex, particularly the village of Uxbridge in the Parish of Hillingdon where the focus of these pages are mainly
                   concentrated.
                                                                                Etymology
Whilst many Churches record the name with various spellings i.e. Goulet, Gowlet, Gowlate, Goulette and Gowlett etc., we
must be reminded that the documenting of events lay in the hands of the local Parsonage, often struggling to record foreign
names.  These ‘Anglicized’ versions were often recorded phonetically and thus differed greatly from the language of their
Origin, this was particularly evident in Gaelic and to a lesser extent French and German variations and in consequence the
spelling does vary throughout the centuries.

                                                                                  Uxbridge & Hillingdon, Middlesex

During the Early Post Medieval Period in the Parish of Hillingdon comprised an area of well over 200 sq. acres within the
County of Middlesex, England.  It is unknown at this point in time exactly when the Gowlett's arrived in the District but it is
thought to be around the mid to late 16th Century.
The ancient village of Hillingdon is situated some 20 miles NWN of London and boasts at its center the Church of St. John the
Baptist built in the 1100’s and Hillingdon Manor standing well before 1086 AD.  During the English Civil War the Manor became
famous as the place where the commissioners of Charles and the Parliament met om 1645 to consider the terms of a treaty, which
however an agreement was not reached. The Manor was occupied by Cromwell in 1647.
Within this Parish lay the village of Uxbridge located at a distance of about 1.4 miles from the village of Hillingdon.  These areas
were filled with gentle country scenes and thatched roofed houses made of various materials including stone and brick and stood
within the villages and also dotted the outlaying countryside. The primary industry in Uxbridge during the early 17th century was
farming but several Mills were also noted in the Township and a Market was established at Uxbridge upon Petition by 1633. This
Market enhanced the Prosperity of Uxbridge so much so that within a few years it had overtaken Hillingdon Village as the major
Township of the Parish. With various plagues prevalent over this century Uxbridge appears to have availed a higher standard of
living and thus provided a better chance of survival for their citizens.

3/4/1785 Sarah d Richard and [Phoebe?] Gowlett. [Entry for mother's name actually reads 'Mary' [entry is as received from HFHS].
Note: Checking this entry - '?' - Richard [the younger] was aged only sixteen at this time and his future wife Phoebe was then
aged twelve. The entry was found to be illegible for the mother's name and was 'tenuously thought' to read 'Phoebe' as the
HFHS insertion '?' implies. It has been re-assessed and now reconsidered by another source to be 'Mary' who was the wife of
Richard Gowlett [the elder]. There is later evidence to suggest that the latter transcription is correct.
