                                    1824          James Isaac Gowlett was born a twin, baptised 19th March 1824 at St. Maragrets, Uxbridge, the son of
                                                      James Gowlett and his wife Elizabeth noted: father's Occupation: 'Publican'.

                                    Siblings    James had a several siblings, his twin brother Richard Joseph Gowlett and a younger sister Elizabeth 
                                                       born in 1828 and twins Thomas Samuel and Phoebe were born in 1833  See Father's Biography.

                                                      His father was recorded as the  victualler  at 'Catherine Arms' Inn near Uxbridge.    

                                    Grandparents;  James' grandparents, Richard Gowlett & Phoebe [nee Fletcher] were both living at Uxbridge at the 
                                                      time of his father's death.
                                 
                                    1841 Census his mother Elizabeth was recorded living at Windsor Street, Green, Uxbridge with his younger siblings;

                                     1841 Census;  James now aged seventeen [census [rounded] states aged 15yrs] was working as a 'Man Servant'  
                                                      at Iver, Buckinghamshire, 3 miles from Uxbridge at the home of Thomas Sherwood, Solicitor & his wife Mary
                                                      address given as 'Marsfields' Iver.         
                                                      His paternal grandmother, Phoebe Gowlett aged now sixty was also working there as a 'Female Servant'.

                                      1841         His twin brother Richard was not found [apologies - contrary to last update] it is thought he may have
                                                       been staying  with his aging paternal grandfather Richard Gowlett at the corner of Church Yard Row and 
                                                       Vine Street, Uxbridge. and was possibly inadvertently recorded as 'Thomas' .

                                                                                           

                                     1851 Census: James was found recorded aged 26, living at Hillingdon Lane, Uxbridge Common, his occupation given 
                                                    as a Groom.  His mother had moved to London where she was working as a servant and his sisters, Elizabeth
                                                    and Phoebe, although not found in this Census to date are considered to have married within the following
                                                    five years.  His brother Thomas has not been found post 1841 Census. 
 
                                     1852:     At the age of  twenty-eight James Isaac Gowlett married twenty-five year old Charlotte Bignell at nearby 
                                                   St. John the Baptist at Hillingdon on the 10th October 1852.

                                                                  Louisa Gowlate [Gowlet], baptised 11th December 1853 at Hillingdon.  Father recorded 'as a groom'.
                                                                                              Buried 14th July 1864, Hillingdon. Est. aged 9 years.
                                                                  Thomas Gowlate [Gowlet], baptised 11th February 1855 [age0] at Uxbridge. Father recorded as 'a servant'.
                                                                                              Died unmarried & without issue 1900 See Epilogue.
                                                                  James Richard Gowlate [Gowlett] baptised 19th July 1857 at Uxbridge.  Recorded as 'a servant'.
                                                                                              Died unmarried & without issue 1905See Epilogue.
                                                                  Dorothy Ann Gowlate [Gowlett], baptised 7th November 1858 at Uxbridge.
                                                                                              Appears to have died very young. 
                                                                  George Richard Gowlate [Gowlett], baptised 29th July 1860 at Uxbridge.  Father recorded as 'a coachman'.
                                                                                               George died at Uxbridge in 1883 considered unmarried & without issue. See Epilogue.
                                                                  Richard Gowlate [Gowlett], baptised 14th March 1862 at Uxbridge. Father recorded as 'a coachman'.

                                                                                              Phoebe married Edward Adams in 1894. See Epilogue.

                                     1894:     James' wife Charlotte Gowlett [nee Bignal] died at Uxbridge in 1894 at the age of sixty-seven. 

                                     1899:     James Isaac Gowlett survived his wife by a further five years and died at Uxbridge in 1899 at the age of 
                                                   seventy-five.  
                                                   He was known to be survived by his sons Thomas aged 44yrs and James Richard aged 44yrs and possibly 
                                                   his two youngest daughters Ann aged thirty [possibly married] and Emily aged twenty-seven also possibly 
                                                   married and several grandchildren.
                                                   Dorothy, William and Phoebe were surviving.

                                      Thomas Gowlett [1855-1900]:  son of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal. 
                                                 Baptised 11th February 1855 [age0] at Uxbridge.

                                                 At the age of fourteen Thomas was convicted of a Felony [details unknown] possibly sent to Coldbathfields 
                                                 Prison in London sentenced to 3 months and 4 years detention respectively.

                                                 By the 1871 Census held on the 2nd April Thomas had been transferred to the Boys Home [Reformatory] at 
                                                 Spanish Road, Wandsworth Surrey.

                                                 A year later in 1872 while still under detention Thomas was caught stealing 11 pieces of wood and subsequently

                                                 By the 1881 Census, Thomas had returned home and was living with his parents and siblings at Wood Row 
                                                 Uxbridge, aged 26yrs, unmarried, working as a labourer. 

                                                 Thomas Gowlett died nine years later at Uxbridge in the December Qtr. 1900 at the recorded age of 44yrs.
                                                 He appears to have died unmarried and without issue.

                                     James Richard Gowlett [1857-1905]: son of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal. 
                                                 Baptised 19th July 1857 at Uxbridge.
 
                                                 James Richard has not been found on the 1881 Census to date.
                                                 James was recorded in the 1891 Census living with his mother and siblings aged 37 unmarried [see above]  
                                                 In the 1901 Census James was found Single, aged 47, a Painter, working, recorded with his brother-in-law 
                                                 Edwin Adams and sister Phoebe at High Street, Uxbridge.  
                                                 James Richard Gowlett died at Uxbridge in 1905 at the recorded age of 48yrs Reg. June Qtr. 1905 [Uxbridge]
                                                 He is believed to have died unmarried & without issue.

                       George Richard Gowlett [1860-1883]: son of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal. 
                                                 Baptised 29th July 1860 at Uxbridge.
  
                                                 George appears on the 1881 Census living with parents and siblings at Wooden Row Uxbridge aged 20yrs 
                                                 [unmarried].  
                                                 George Gowlett died at Uxbridge two years later in 1883 at the recorded age of 22yrs.

                                      Richard Gowlett [1862-1891]:  son of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal. 
                                                 Baptised 14th March 1862 at Uxbridge. 

                                                 Richard appeared on the 1881 Census [unmarried] aged 19yrs living at Wooden Row Uxbridge with his parents 
                                                 & siblings.
                                                 Richard was recorded in the 1891 Census Unmarried, living at home with his mother & siblings [see above]. 
                                                 Richard died a few months later at Uxbridge in the Sept. Qtr. 1891 at the recorded age of 29yrs.
                                                 Considered to have died unmarried & without issue.

                       Phoebe Elizabeth Gowlate [1863-1924]: daughter of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal.  
                                                 Baptised 27 Dec 1863 at Uxbridge.

                                                 Phoebe was not found on the 1881 Census although she would have been aged eighteen at this time.
                                                 1891 Census Phoebe was visiting her aunt Ann Hogg, widow, aged 59, living on own means, born at Hillingdon.
                                                 Phoebe was recorded as her niece, aged 27, also born Hillingdon.  Also recorded was Edwin Adams aged 27, 
                                                 a fitter [Gas] Lock, born Buckinghamshire, Denham, recorded 'a visitor'. 
   
                                                 Two years later, at the age of thirty one, Phoebe Elizabeth Gowlett married Edwin Adams at Uxbridge in the 
                                                 Dec. Qtr. 1894.
                                                 Phoebe was recorded in the 1901 Census living at  High Street, Uxbridge with spouse 
                                                 Edward aged 34, born in Denham, Buckinghamshire, working as a Labourer at the Glue Works. 
                                                 Her brother Richard, then a Painter was also recorded at the same address. 
                                                 There were no issue recorded, Phoebe was by now aged thirty-eight. 

                                                 Phoebe Elizabeth Adams [nee Gowlett] died in the March Qtr. 1924 [Uxbridge] at the recorded age of 60 years.
                                                 It is assumed Phoebe died without issue survived by her spouse Edwin Adams recorded died in the March Qtr. 1935
                                                 at Uxbridge at the recorded age of sixty-eight.   

                      William Henry Gowlett :  son of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal.
                              Birth Registered Sept. Qtr. 1865 [Uxbridge]. No Baptism found.
                                                 William Henry was recorded on the 1881 Census, aged 16yrs, living at Wooden Row Uxbridge with his parents 
                                                 & siblings. 
                                                 May be the same William Gowlett recorded in the 1901 Census, Married, stated aged 33 [born 1868!] living at Harfield 
                                                 Moor, Harfield, a Labourer at the Cement Works, born Hillingdon.  Several entries at the address most married,
                                                 recorded without their wives.  He may have married or remarried at Hackney in 1903.
                                                 This William Henry Gowlett died Dec. Qtr. 1921 [Eton] at the recorded age of sixty-three [born 1868!]     
                                                 No further information.

                       Ann Gowlett :  daughter of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal.
                                                 Baptised 12th Sept. 1869 at Uxbridge.
  
                                                 Ann was found on the 1881 Census aged 11years living at Wooden Row Uxbridge with her parents & siblings.
                                                 1891 Census was with her mother and Siblings at Uxbridge aged 22 years.                
                                                 At the age of twenty-one Annie Gowlett married George Coleman in the June Qtr. 1890 at Eton, Buckinghamshire.
                                                 George died soon after their marriage,assumedly in the last month of the same Qtr. of his Marriage June 1890
                                                 at Eton. i.e. very late June.  

                                                 It is considered that Annie was with child and her pregnancy nearing term at the 1891 Census which records her 
                                                 living with her mother Charlotte at Uxbridge. Ann was recorded 'a widow', aged 22.  Her elder unmarried brothers
                                                 Thomas, James & Richard were also at the same address, possibly rallying for support.

                                                 A daughter was recorded Annie Charlotte Elizabeth Coleman at Uxbridge, Registered born presumably in the 
                                                 first weeks of the June Qtr. 1891 - i.e. March. Recorded aged '0'.
                                                 The infant died Sept. Qtr. 1891 at Uxbridge.
                                                 Nothing further has been found for Annie to date.

                                      Emily Jane Gowlett: daughter of James Isaac Gowlett [Gowlate] by his wife Charlotte nee Bignal.
                                                 Born 1872.  No Baptism found.
 
                                                 Emily Jane was found on the 1881 Census aged 9 years living at Wooden Row Uxbridge with her parents & 
                                                 siblings.
                                                 Not found in the 1891 Census to date. 
                                                 At the age of nineteen Emily Jane married at Uxbridge Dec. Qtr. 1891 either Richard Henry Stephens or 
                                                 Thomas Alfred Stroud.
                                                 No further information.
