The Great War
Several of Simon's great-grandsons were part of Allied Forces during WWI & WWII. Simon's
grandson Charles Henry Scard was decorated as a Merchant Seaman. Charles was then
documented in Australia where with
Herbert Thomas Scard, enlisted 11th Nov 1915 in the
Australian Imperial Forces, recorded born Dorchester, England. Grandson Robert Sydney Scard
also joined the Allies in Australia. The men returned to Australia where they remained until
their deaths. Evidence suggests that they were in communication with members of several other
Scard Branches who had also found their way to Australia - Seperate page is under construction
In England their cousin Benjamin Scard, grandson of their uncle James of Cerne, was killed in
Action at Aldershot 4th March 1916 [aged 19 years] his father John Vincent Scard at Belmont Road wasnamed next-of-kin. Stories of the valor of men bearing the name Scard are many.

relating to Simeon in the Biography of his father William and some newspapers clipping which

Timeline
1797: Simon Scard was baptised at Cerne Abbas, Dorset on the 1st Oct 1797, the youngest child and sixth son of William Scard and his wife Margaret nee Groves.
He is considered the namesake of his paternal grandfather Simon Groves, Yeoman of Cerne Abbas. Simon had several siblings. Both his parents were
native to Cerne, his father was recorded under the care of the Parish for several years after the death of his mother in 1760. Simon's mother was the
daughter of a successful farmer, Simeon Groves whose family was native to Cerne for several prior generations. Simon reflects his grandfather by becoming
a successful farmer in later years. His elder brother James was recorded in 1826 with heavily pitted skin, a remnant of small pox during childhood. It is not
known if Simon or his other siblings bore the scars of the infection.
1819 At the age of twenty two Simon traveled 10 miles East of Cerne to Mapperton where he, with Fanny Holt, were witnesses to the marriage of his brother
James to Esther White on the 20th February 1819.

1823 In 1823 a lease was signed by a Scard Family member of Cerne from the River's Estate comprising a messuage, yard and buildings. This year Simon joins
his father and brother William in the Rate Books at Cerne Abbas for the first time and where he was recorded for many years owning several properties.
For an example of digitised images of these original records see the biography of his father William Scard where they are displayed.

   At the age of twenty-eight Simon married Mary Furber,  aged forty-two [fourteen years his senior] in 1825;
Simon Scard, bachelor of Cerne Abbas and Mary Furber, spinster of Cerne Abbas married by Licence 17th January 1825 at Cerne Abbas (both signed).
Witnesses: Thomas Furber & Margery Furber (siblings of the bride). Simon's father was aged 72yrs at this time.
The Bride: Mary Furber was born at Buckland Newton, Dorset, baptised 23rd June 1783 the daughter of James Furber and his wife Anne. Mary had several
younger siblings, all baptised at Buckland Newton.

1828 Simon and Mary had only one known child, a son, Simon Scard baptised 17th April 1828 at Cerne son of Simon & Mary - See Epilogue.

1829 The following year Simon's brother William Scard [the younger] died prematurely leaving a widow with several young children and it seems a child
in utero baptised after his brother's death. "William Scard [the younger] was buried on the 25th June 1829 recorded 'age 39' years, noted of Duck Street,
Cerne Abbas" Records show that William was receiving support by the Overseers of the Poor of Cerne during his illness. After his death, his widow and
their children continued this support for several years. William mirrors his paternal grandfather William Scard who was also dependant on the Parish before
his premature death over seventy-five years ago in 1754. Four months later Simon's father William Scard was buried at Cerne Abbas 'William Scard buried
5th October 1829 'of Dorchester Road, Cerne Abbas' aged 78.' He was survived his wife Margaret aged 73 of forty-nine years marriage and by four of his eight
children; Robert [married] aged 45, Elizabeth [married]aged 44, James [married] aged 36, and of course Simon [married] aged thirty-two. Also sixteen
                        grandchildren by his sons.

1831-37 Simon takes an apprentice 'William Clark to Simon Scard of Cerne Abbas, Fellmonger Date 31st August 1831. Six years later Simeon's mother
