and
John Scard [Mariner/Butcher] [1818-1905] of the Gosport Hampshire Scard Family Lineage
Thomas Scard: was a Surgeon in Sydney the son of Edward Scard 'Surgeon' of London who made his way to Australia working
as a Ship's Surgeon in the mid 1860's. Both his parents died prematurely when he was aged fourteen. He had one
sibling, a sister Eliza. He continued his schooling under the guidance of his Paternal uncles and respecting the
wishes of his father [in his father's Will] Thomas joined the Army for a brief period, later becoming a Surgeon
himself. He married Ellen Jordan in 1862 in London.
Further information relating to Thomas' life in England can be found in the Biography of his father.
In 1867 The Sydney Rate Books show his encounter with another Scard Family member of the Gosport Lineage
i.e. John Scard, then a Butcher who had arrived in Sydney working as a Mariner around 1839. Much has been
already been written relating to
John Scard and his family of Sydney.
Thomas had acquired two properties in Sydney within two years of his arrival, one of which was rented to John Scard;

John Scard is shown to have also owned several properties in Sydney but it is considered this premises may have
offered a better position for John's Butcher Shop.
Thomas was declared insolvent in 1869.
Thomas Scard died 1871 in Sydney succumbing to complications under anesthetic whilst himself under surgery at the
age of . His death was published in Sydney, New Zealand and England.
His family had been unaware of his whereabouts, made plain in the Will of his Uncle the renown
Reverend Thomas Scard of Durley, Hampshire.
A Codicil to the Will was made by his childless paternal Uncle in 1872 to the effect
"I have just received intelligence of my nephew's death",
in which case his uncle then directed the Legacy to his niece Eliza Mary Adams [nee Scard] the wife of Seymour
Adams, Esquire, the sister of Thomas
Thomas was survived by his widow Ellen and one possible daughter, Madeline*.
* Thomas' marriage and Madeline's birth is very involved.
It is far too much to deal with here but a family member who has done much research relating to Thomas, Ellen
and Madeline is compiling her research and this will be uploaded on completion.
