Scard Family
William Scard
[1829-1899]
Of Gosport, Hampshire
Spouse: Clara Brown
[1835-1898]
1829: Birth William Scard born 27th October 1829 baptised 27th October 1833 under the name 'John William Scard'
the son of John Scard of Portsea & his 2nd wife Ann at St. Marys Portsea.
It is unknown why the name 'John' was chosen, as his father already had a son 'John' [aged around eleven at this time*]
by his deceased first wife Fanny nee Butcher.
Subsequent Documents show that the initial name was soon dropped and that he was known as 'William Scard' in Census,
Marriage, births & marriages of his children. He was buried under the name 'William Seager Scard' in 1899 aged 69.
* William's half brother 'John' may not have been living in the house at the time of William's birth. He may very well have
been apprenticed and living 'out of home' at this time. John found his way to Australia around 1839 where he married
and had issue.
