Walter Scard was born before 1697 very probably in North Dorset.
At St. Edmunds Exeter, Devonshire Walter Scard married on the 28th October 1718 (LDS), Rebecca the eldest daughter of Malachi Burford and his wife Joanne nee Adams.
The bride was aged around eighteen. Evidence reveals that Walter and Rebecca remained living near Exeter for ten years after their marriage and where several issue were
born before moving to East Stour, North Dorset around 1728. Another son was born at the Dorset venue.
Issue; 1719 - 1) Elizabeth Scard baptised 31st March 1719 at St. Edmunds, Exeter, Devon (LDS) - outcome unknown
1722 - 2) Mary Scard baptised 25th November 1722 at St. Edmunds, Exeter, Devon (LDS) - married Joseph Maidment in 1743 and had issue - See Epilogue.
1725 - 3) William Scard baptised 4th July 1725 at Topsham, Devon (LDS) - married Betty Light 1853, died prematurely without issue 1854 - Evidence - See Epilogue.
1728 - 4) John Scard baptised 15th March 1728 at Topsham, Devon (LDS) - died before 1732 (by inference)
1732 - 5) John Scard "baptised 16th July 1732 "son of Walter & Rebecca Scard" at East Stour, Dorset - Assumed died without issue 1791 (Ancestry-East Stour PR)
1743 - In 1743 their daughter Mary married Joseph Maidment at East Stour, settling at nearby Motcombe where the couple baptised several children - See Epilogue.
1744 - The following year Walter Scard died, buried at East Stour 14th February 1744 estimated aged around fifty.
1744 - His widow Rebecca Scard [nee Burford] was buried two weeks later on the 4th March 1844 at East Stour, Dorset estimated aged around forty-five.

Devonshire Notes
Scard;
1727 - Parallel to Walter's period of residence in Devonshire a baptism was recorded for Henry Scard on the 12th February 1727 son of John and Mary Scard
at Topsham (LDS) at the same time that Walter and Rebecca were presenting children at the same venue.
1744 -
Burford: Rebecca's parents were married viz: "Malachi Burford "of Farrington, Cordwainer", married Joanne Adams of Topsham spinster 27th Oct 1697"

Epilogue
Child 1: Elizabeth Scard eldest daughter of Walter Scard and his wife Rebecca nee Burford : No further information.
Child 2: Mary Scard [1722-1757] daughter of Walter Scard and his wife Rebecca nee Burford;
Mary Scard married Joseph Maidment by banns on the 11th November 1743 at East Stour [OPC].
Joseph and Mary moved 2 – 4 miles WSW to Motcombe where Joseph’s family had been resident for some decades.
Issue;
Thomas Maidment born between 1744-1746 - buried 14th September 1746 son of Joseph - Motcombe.
John Maidment baptised 24th May 1747 son of Joseph - Motcombe.
Ann Maidment baptised 5th March 1751 d.o. Joseph & Mary - Motcombe
Possible daughter Mary Maidment - buried unmarried 1st April 1783 daughter of Joseph - Motcombe.
Mary Maidment nee Scard was buried 2nd May 1757 'wife of Joseph Maidment - Motcombe estimated aged thirty-five.
Possible Surviving issue; John 10yrs, Ann 6 yrs, possible Mary ? yrs.
Child 3: William Scard [1725-1753] eldest son of Walter Scard and his wife Rebecca nee Burford;
Hypothesis 1: Married Elizabeth Jenkins at Milton Magna in 1751 and had issue and died prematurely at Cerne Abbas - Perhaps unlikely.
Hypothesis 2: In 1754 young William appears to have followed the Trade of his maternal grandfather Malachi Burford as a shoemaker.
Banns of marriage were published at East Stour between William Scard, Shoemaker, of East Stour and Betty Light, spinster.

Three months later William married Betty Light, recorded "formerly of Bath, Somerset" at nearby Sherborne on the
4th November 1754. The couple settled at Sherborne.
William died the following year at the age of thirty, buried at Sherborne 28th Feb 1755.
There were no children baptised during the interim or posthumously.
His widow remarried the following year.
Child 5: John Scard [1732-1791] youngest son of Walter Scard and his wife Rebecca nee Burford;
John Scard was buried 4th September 1791 at East Stour, North Dorset at the estimated age of fifty-nine. No evidence was found of marriage or issue. |
