~ FEATURE STORY ~
Walter's eldest known son William has often been associated with William Scard born senior born <1730 of Cerne Abbas. However recent evidence casts a shadow on this hypothesis. New evidence reveals another candidate for the son of Walter Scard also named William whose marriage Banns were published in 1754 at St. Marys East Stour as "William Scard, Shoemaker, of East Stour", the same village where Walter Scard and his wife Rebecca (nee Burford) settled after moving from Topsham, Devonshire several years prior. Further evidence reveals that Rebecca's father Malachi Burford was recorded a cordwainer (shoemaker) in his marriage at Exeter Cathedral in 1697 and Walter's son young William Scard is considered to have followed the same Trade in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather. After his marriage in 1754 William settled at nearby Sherborne where he died the following year. There were no children baptised during the interim or posthumously. His widow remarried in 1756 at the same venue. William's only brother John also appears died without issue, consistent with Walter & Rebecca names not perpetuated. J.S.Adams
